About skillpipe

What is skillpipe?

skillpipe is an e-reader, which enables students to read digital versions of Microsoft Courseware on their computers. skillpipe exists in two versions, an online reader which can be accessed through any modern browser, and a Windows reader app which users can download and install on their PC. The installation of the reader app enables users to read digital Microsoft Courseware without permanently being connected to the internet once they have successfully logged in for the first time (this first time login requires an active internet connection). By using a single-sign on mechanism, the login data are always the same, no matter which skillpipe version is used.

skillpipe enables students to work with their digital courses. Besides reading through the courses users can add highlights, bookmarks, and annotations to selected text passages. All edits are automatically synchronized with the centralized user account and are therefore instantly available on all devices from which the content is accessed. For all annotations, users can decide if they want to make them publically available. Public annotations are visible to the entire class and represent a great chance to share important information with other students. This mechanism also works the other way around. Users have the option to display public annotations of other students, and their trainer, in their Courseware. This function helps to review the material, find important passages within the text, and prepare in an effective way for a certification exam.

About skillpipe

Why do I need an account with skillpipe?

New users will be asked to create a skillpipe account upon first usage. This account will then store all information about their redeemed courses and act as the central bookshelf. Moreover, it provides the following functionalities:

  • Protects the courses from unauthorized use.
  • Stores and synchronizes all highlights, bookmarks, and notes across all devices the account is accessed from.
  • Provides the possibility to change the login password.

About skillpipe

What are the advantages of the skillpipe cloud system?

skillpipe is a cloud-based e-reader which is built around the central user profile hosted in the cloud. This user profile stores all information on redeemed courses, as well as any annotations that the student made within the content. All course updates are instantly synchronized with the cloud profile, enabling the student to access the latest content anytime and anywhere. The innovative cloud services also encourage students to share their insights with other students and allow for a whole new collaborative learning experience.

About skillpipe

I can access skillpipe online. Why should I use the reader app?

The skillpipe reader app offers the same functionality as the online reader. However, users are not required to have to have a permanent internet connection and can also access the content offline. Please note that for the first login an active internet connection is required to create the local user profile and synchronize the access rights for all purchased courses.

Once this local profile has been created, the content can be accessed with no restrictions. Users can read their courses, and create highlights, notes, and bookmarks even when they are offline. Once the user re-connects with the internet, all notations made while offline will automatically synchronize with the central user account. Therefore, no information will be lost. Usage of the reader app is especially helpful for training centers or users with a slow internet connection. For more information on how to access courses with the reader app, please click here.

How can I bring other students onto the same page?

Students should be able to keep their own display settings for their Courseware and still follow the rest of the class easily. The text position indicator facilitates staying on track with other people in class while keeping preferred reader settings. Please refer to the sections below for more information about the text position indicator.

What is the position ID and how does it work?

At the bottom of the course you can find the position ID which references your current position in the course. The position indicator consists of two boxes:

  • The first input box refers to the module you are currently in.
  • The second input box refers to the specific text position within the module. To be more precise, it identifies the first word on the page. This position is updated as you scroll through the module.

Please note: the 'Title' and the 'About This Course' section represent separate modules and are counted as such. This means that the first content module of the course could be listed as module 3 in the position ID even though the module name might say something different.

How do I identify a position ID in my course?

To identify a position in your course, you could create a highlight or annotation on the passage you want to reference. If you hover with your mouse over the highlighted section in the text, you will see the position ID displayed.

Working with your Courseware when being offline

What do I need to do to access my courses offline?

The skillpipe reader app allows you to access Courseware while being online as long as a local user profile has been created and you have redeemed the license for the selected course. The local profile on the computer is created upon the first login to the skillpipe reader app. This process requires an active internet connection. During this process your access rights are also synchronized with the local profile.

If you need guidance on how to access courses using the skillpipe reader app, please click here.

How can I synchronize the highlights and bookmarks that I have created while being offline?

If you are working with your course while being offline, all changes are stored with your local user profile. If you establish an active internet connection while using the skillpipe reader app, all highlights, notes and bookmarks which you have created while being offline will automatically synchronize with your online user profile. This functionality ensures that none of the work that you are doing offline is lost. Once the information is synchronized it can be accessed from all other devices from which you access skillpipe.
